ONLINE LEARNING FOR COUNSELLORS & PSYCHOTHERAPISTS

WORKSHOP RECORDING DETAILS

Disruption and rupture to the therapeutic alliance can be deeply disturbing to both the client and the therapist. These moments of rupture may evoke deep shame for the therapist and a sense that things have gone terribly wrong in the therapeutic work. Alternatively, they may be seen as moments of opportunity with the possibility of seeking creativity and transformation in the therapeutic relationship.

The practitioner, when faced by therapeutic rupture will often enter an arena of confusion, defensiveness or shame. This workshop will provide a clear, theoretical rationale for what might be happening in the therapeutic relationship at this time – allowing the practitioner to gain a greater understanding and a greater grounding in their practice at this difficult moment.

This workshop will include some key theoretical ideas:

  • Markers for withdrawal-type ruptures
  • Markers for confrontation-type rupture
  • Conceptualising therapeutic rupture as an Impasse or a manifestation of attachment
  • Transformative and Creative Thinking
  • Caplan’s seven stages of “Freedom” to support the therapist to regain stability and groundedness

This course was so informative and really thought provoking. It has left me thinking of how I and my clients may move towards or withdraw from the other and what to look out for in terms of signs of rupture and how to respond.
