ONLINE LEARNING FOR COUNSELLORS & PSYCHOTHERAPISTS

WORKSHOP RECORDING DETAILS

Over the past two decades, access to pornography has become considerably easier with the advent of the internet. Lockdowns in Britain since March 2020 have for many people increased both a sense of isolation and a dependency on the internet for human interaction, and the temptation to seek a quick fix of the “feel good” factor offered by pornography is only a click away for many hours of the day.

In this workshop, we shall be considering:

  • What we mean by pornography: what is legal, moral, supportive or harmful?
  • What we mean by addiction: the intrapsychic processes of compulsive behaviours and question if this is an addiction
  • The neuroscientific process involved: what is happening in the brain during cycles of sexual desire and satisfaction
  • How we locate these concepts in a TA framework and how we can think about this as Transactional Analysts
  • What strategies might be useful: how can we be of service to those who are struggling with unhealthy use of pornography?

Wilf will also touch more generally on the current legal and socio-political aspects of using the internet to access pornography during the lockdown.

Additionally, we shall visit (and revisit!) the problems, causes and even benefits (yes, really!) of viewing pornography online.

I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. Wilf was very honest and knowledgeable and the connection to previous traumas was very helpful in understanding that porn addiction is another kind of maladaptive behaviour with underlying issues being the main cause. I also enjoyed the point around not colluding with the client in their helplessness and how useful it can be to clarify addiction where the body is at risk of serious injury if the substance is suddenly withdrawn versus the agency in the adult ego state of looking at choices and changes in behaviour in changing life going forward. The three case studies were very helpful in considering what is driving those behaviours. Very informative and helpful course and I shall be looking out for more from Wilf.
